Anxiety - Explained in 2 Minutes

What is Anxiety?

It’s an emotion. It is neither good or bad. It can be challenging to feel.

  • Anxiety is defined as excessive worry about the future; that can involve other feelings like fear.

  • Anxiety is unique in that it causes your mind, thoughts and energy to be preoccupied on potential things that could happen in the future. For example: your exam, job interview results, the way another person may react to how you look or sound, a relationship ending, health or appearance.

  • Anxiety causes you to overly plan, be controlling, muscle tension, avoidant, fidgety, restless, difficult to concentrate, sleep issues, irritable, easily tired out. Even withdrawal from situations, people and places

HOWEVER, if you start to experience FEAR along with anxiety, it can be overwhelming and uncomfortable. Your anxious thoughts are in the future, but you are physically responding to a trigger in the present moment (the now).

Fear will cause you to experience: a racing heart, changes in your breathing, overly alert, dizzy, sweating This is known as the Fight or Flight response. Our body’s normal way of responding automatically to threat.
